A Charming Reminder to Write the Book

Bracelet

MY BRACELET

For longer than I’d like to admit, I have worn this bracelet daily – without fail – to remind myself to write that book.

That Book.

The same book that tried to be written back in 2011.

Well, as I mentioned during my post, yesterday – I’m practicing my ‘verbal’ query letter so I can pitch it to an agent this summer.

So what’s the book about?  You rightfully ask!

First, let me tell you what it’s not about.

You can rest assured it isn’t a glossy, rose-tinted, rainbowed narration of my nearly perfect life.

Yuck.  (I’ve the first half of many of those books.)

I’ll leave that writing lane to other authors who seem to have it all together – all the time.

Those writers insinuate that their life is a lesson in perfection and relentless happiness.  And the rocky times are superficially skated over with barely a mention in a very short paragraph…then on to the next triumph or happiness chapter.

My ambitious book endeavor (and all of my blogging) is about sharing information that either worked very well in my life so that you might be able to translate it to yours….or to admit to foolish mistakes for avoidance purposes.

 With that said – I have 2 books that I will be pitching soon.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let me tell you about the first book.
It’s about Baby Boomers’ attitude toward money:  Spending and Saving.
It’s about how our belief and value system has affected our parenting.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

How did I ever come up with this topic?  Got the idea over a plate of delicious food.  My husband and I were having a quiet dinner one evening with a lovely couple.  They are definitely in our baby-boomer age bracket with the same demographics of being Empty-Nesters but still working full-time and pressing the pedal to the metal of life.

The conversation was light, easy and relaxed…until right about the time dessert was being served and coffee cups were filled.  The topic of retirement accounts intercepted our dinner as if on some mysterious, cosmic queue. As it always does. For some reason, baby-boomers love, love, love to talk about their money.  It seems like they can hold their tongues during the appetizer, salad, and entree’ but when that dessert comes out – so does the undeniable urge to share (in not-so-passive-aggressive code) about how large their nest egg truly is.

An ole’ friend of ours flew into town for a business meeting.  So, of course, we decided to meet for a quick pizza and cold beer.  Jovial, humorous, and delightful was the conversation.  But once again, as that last slice was taken from the platter, our dinner guest blurted out the balance of his 401k.  No Kidding.  We weren’t talking finances or any subject near that.  My husband and I nearly choked on our pizza. We felt like we were actors in a poorly scripted movie.

Well, you might just be thinking that is an unusual and unique incident. Or we have unusual and unique friends. No Way.  As a former stockbroker for Smith Barney, I have been exposed to a large subset of folks who live to talk about the success of their 401K’s and Roth or Sep IRA’s.  For them, it is as entertaining as talking batting averages in the College World Series in Omaha.  Or how wonderful it is that DJ finally won a major golf tournament.

 And guess what?  They are always about my age.

So why write a post about my book on The Theory of Baby Boomers’ Moolah?

Because if I can finally get the gumption to pitch a book idea which truly gives me stomach cramps to even think about,  what do you want to do in 2016 that stretches YOU?

In my inaugural post on March 23, 2015, I wrote:

“True human tragedy is:  If on your last day, the song in your spirit is left unsung.”

My organic reason for writing – Blogs or Books – is to give you sincere encouragement and genuine inspiration to:

SING YOUR OWN SPECIAL SONG.
