The Stone ~ Discovering Your Masterpiece

 marble column

Hello.  It’s a great Friday morning.

Thank goodness for my backspace and delete keys.

I had my topic all set in stone (pun, most definitely, intended) – only to delete every sentence as soon as it appeared on the screen.  You were suppose to read a post titled:  The Mountain. I already had a photo selected ready to purchase.

Then I had an epiphany.  Why?  Who knows.

But Marble came to mind.

So switching gears completely, I am sharing an inspirational quote from the greatest Man of Marble in the history of our universe…Mr. Simoni of Italy.

Heard of Him?  I bet you have.

If you need a more formal introduction… it’s Mr. Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni.

Or on really casual terms…just Mike.

‘I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.’

~ Michelangelo

I know.  I know.  This is a quote that you have seen half a dozen times on posters taped to walls.

But have you ever taken the time to really study the words?  Not just casually glance and read them?

You and I are metaphorically like a block of marble.  Rough, but Ready to become something really spectacular and successful.  There is greatness inside of you destined to be carved and set free…so the world can see your beauty.

There is a misnomer in society’s synonyms for ‘greatness’ and ‘success’ and ‘beauty’.

I am not, for one moment, referring to worldly riches and monetary means or outward, physical appearance.

I believe this quote is referring to the innate genius in all of us.  Doing what we were born to do.

There are geniuses in all walks of life.  Hairstylists.  Teachers. Carpenters. Landscape Architects. Writers. Engineers. Web Designers. People living the life they were meant to live.  And being extraordinarily good at it.

And every morning – we all need reminders and motivational sources to renew and redirect us back to our desire to become that remarkable person…

It’s worth passing on what Einstein said,

“Everybody is a genius.  But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

Unleashing the Masterpiece.

That’s exactly what Michelangelo did when he chiseled David.

I’ve had the distinct privilege of meeting David twice.

The first time I was introduced to David, I was in my early 20’s while in summer school in France trying to learn fluent French. Unfortunately, my pronounced, southern accent didn’t lend itself to an acceptable dialect of the language.  It caused contempt among the native speakers.

I had taken a side trip to Florence, Italy.

Going to see David was merely a checkmark next to my list of Things To Do Before Going Home to the USA.

When David came into view, tears inexplicably started to stream down my face.  I had no idea why I cried.  Never had I before… or since then… been emotionally moved to cry in front of a piece of art.

At that moment, I felt the clear and absolute presence of Michelangelo’s genius – an intuitive talent divinely ordained and blessed by God.

My message to you this Friday is simple:  Let us both not live our numbered days on earth trying to be a ‘fish climbing a tree’.  But rather, let’s discover the masterpiece in our marble.

Another Week of Words and Reading.  Thank you for that.

On deck – next week – I will have another post for my Dyslexia Series. And a Surprise Post just for you!  Perhaps, The Mountain will appear next Friday???
